Biography

Juan José Pereira
(Paraguay; 1994)



Artistic director and programmer of the International Contemporary Film Festival of Asuncion and Image and Sound Designer at the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urbanism of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

  • He received an award at HotDocs Forum 2024, Canada
  • He was part of the Berlinale Talents 2023, during the 74th Berlin International Film Festival.
  • He was part of Malaga Talents 2023, during the Malaga Film Festival.
  • He was part of the IDFAcademy 2021, Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival.
  • He took part in the Archives in Non-Fiction Film seminar given by Onyeka Igwe at University College London.
  • He took part in the Université d'été de La Femis in Paris, a program supported by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs. It aims to help participants acquire the essential tools for documentary filmmaking and develop their artistic approach, France, 2019.
  • He participated in the Summer University of Documentary at the 72nd Locarno Film Festival, organized by the University of Italian Switzerland and the Locarno Film Festival, in collaboration with Critics' Week. Locarno, Switzerland, 2019.

  • Writer of the culture column of the newspaper ABC color of Asuncion, Paraguay.
  • Programmer of the Swiss Film Series with the support of the Embassy of Switzerland in Paraguay and Uruguay, at the  French Alliance of Asunción.
  • He was part of the documentary film workshop in charge of Gustavo Fontán, organized by the DAC (Argentine Film Directors), Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2020.
  • Taught the non-fiction film workshop at  French Alliance of Asunción, Paraguay, 2019.
  • He has taught the documentary film workshop at  French Alliance of Asunción, Paraguay, 2020.
  • Dictated the course on History of Latin American Cinema at El Granel, Paraguay, 2020.
  • Programmer of the Contemporary French Documentary Film Series at  French Alliance of Asunción, Paraguay, 2020.
  • Programmer of "Sin Mar" Latin American Film Series, at the Centro Cultural de la Ciudad Carlos Colombino - Manzana de la Rivera, Paraguay, 2020.
  • He was part of the research projects of the University of Buenos Aires: The diffusion of the audiovisual productions of Argentine feature films in Latin America and the IDIS project (Research in Image and Sound Design).
  • Winner of the Lumière Prize, award granted by the Alliance France of Asuncion and the French Embassy in Paraguay, with the support of Fondec (National Fund for Culture and the Arts), Paraguay, 2018.


With the project "Under the flags, the sun" won the special jury prize at INAP and won the Market Between Borders in Brazil.

He also won the IDFA Bertha Fund Award, won the National Fund for the Arts and Culture (FONDEC) and participated in the ARCHÉ creation lab at the Lisbon International Documentary Film Festival, DOCLISBOA, where he won the RTP award for the best project.
